What is Sodium Molybdate?
Sodium molybdate is a soluble salt of the essential trace element molybdenum. Molybdenum is a building block of enzymes containing the molybdenum cofactor (MoCo) (sulfite oxidase, xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase); it plays a role especially in the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids. Dietary molybdenum deficiency does not practically occur in healthy individuals.
- Molecular formula: Na₂MoO₄
- CAS number: 7631-95-0
- Form: Powder / Crystal - Inorganic Molybdenum Salt
- Quality: Food / Pharmaceutical Grade
- Sodium molybdate dihydrate (Na2MoO4·2H2O) contains ~39.7% elemental molybdenum (anhydrous ~46.6%). It is a soluble and stable source of molybdenum; used for nutritional fortification and as a feed additive.
What is Sodium Molybdate Used For? Why is it Used?
Sodium molybdate is a practical source for adding nutritional molybdenum at NRV levels to multivitamin-mineral premixes in a soluble and stable form. It can be positioned with the EFSA-approved function of normal sulfur-containing amino acid metabolism; since human requirements are low, it is used only in trace amounts.
Main areas of use: Dietary Supplements, Diet Supplements, Enzyme Cofactor, Food Preservative.
Usage in Dietary Supplements
- Trace amounts in multivitamin-mineral premixes: Used in very small amounts to provide molybdenum at the NRV (50 µg) level in multivitamin-mineral supplements; its solubility and stability are suitable for premixes.
- Full-spectrum trace mineral products: Serves as a source of molybdenum in comprehensive formulations with the concept of 'all trace minerals'; usually added only to complete the NRV.
- Sufficiency at low doses: Since human requirements are very low (µg level) and sufficient intake is achieved through diet, molybdenum dosage in supplements is kept low; deficiency is rare.
Usage in the Food Industry
- Source of nutrients (fortification): Sodium molybdate (especially dihydrate) is one of the forms evaluated for addition to food supplements as a source of nutritional molybdenum in the EU.
- Trace element additive in animal feed: Sodium molybdate dihydrate (E7) is authorized in the EU as a nutritional feed additive in the group of 'trace element compounds' for all animal species.
Effects on Health
Molybdenum is a mineral that plays a role in many fundamental functions in the body. Main functions authorized/evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA):
- Sulfur-containing amino acid metabolism: Molybdenum contributes to normal sulfur-containing amino acid metabolism (via the sulfite oxidase enzyme; EFSA).
- Unsubstantiated claim (honest note): The claim that molybdenum 'protects DNA, proteins, and lipids from oxidative damage' has not been sufficiently proven and is NOT APPROVED by EFSA; this effect cannot be stated.
Usage Limits in Dietary Supplements
- Nutrient Reference Value (NRV): Molybdenum NRV is 50 µg (1169/2011).
- Tolerable Upper Intake Level (EFSA): EFSA has set the UL for molybdenum for adults at 600 µg/day (lower for children depending on age).
- Turkish legislation (TETGK): Molybdenum is among the permitted minerals under the Turkish Dietary Supplements Regulation; the NRV % must be declared on the label. The current guideline should be followed for the maximum permitted amount in supplements (not fabricated).
Dietary molybdenum intake is generally sufficient and deficiency is rare; high doses in supplements are not necessary.
